Trial of soldiers who committed mutiny postponed

Nigeria’s military authorities have postponed till Thursday the General Court Martial of some 60 soldiers charged with alleged mutiny.

The trial was to have been held at the Mogadishu Cantonment today in Abuja.

The postponement of the trial was confirmed to newsmen on Tuesday by a military source, who did not want to be named.

However, when contacted, the spokesman of the Garrison, Col. Aliyu Yusuf, claimed ignorance of the court martial but promised to inform journalists, whenever a date was fixed for the trial.

The source also said lawyers representing the accused soldiers met with legal officers of the court martial on Tuesday morning and agreed to shift trial till Thursday because of the independence holiday on Wednesday.

One of the lawyers appearing for the soldiers, who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that the trial was postponed till Thursday.

“When I got here (trial venue) this morning, I was told that the court martial has been postpone till Thursday because of the independence anniversary coming up tomorrow, Wednesday," he said.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who was at the venue of the trial at about 10. 45 a. m. reports that the court was under lock and key.

NAN learnt that the soldiers who are standing trial were alleged to have committed mutiny by “refusing to join troops for an operation’’ in Maiduguri on Aug. 4.

Ogogoro vs Vodka: A tale of two spirits

Many people are raising concern that the economic potential of Nigeria’s local gin, otherwise known as Ogogoro, is largely undermined, while its Russian version, Vodka, is highly celebrated worldwide.

This dissimilarity in the public acceptance of Ogogoro and Vodka is in spite of the fact that the two drinks have almost the same taste and a similar impact on the drinkers.

While Ogogoro drinkers are rated lowly, ridiculed and maligned as the dregs of the society, Vodka, on the other hand, is seen as an elitist drink; it is displayed in supermarkets and those who a penchant for drinking it are perceived as high-class people.

Ogogoro has different names in different Nigerian communities; it is called Sapele water, Shepke, Kparaga, Kai-kai, Push-me-I-push-you, Crim-kena, Akpuru achia, among other names.

In some places, Ogogoro is seen as an illicit drink but Vodka and other foreign spirits are stocked in famous liquor shops and big hotels.

Observers, however, trace the trend to the British colonialists who prohibited the production and consumption of Ogogoro in order to boost the sales and consumption of imported gin.

In some states in Nigeria, there are specific legislations outlawing the sale of Ogogoro and ironically, there is no mention of Vodka and other foreign hot drinks in the products’ prohibition list.

Interestingly, some foreigners who have had the privilege of savouring Ogogoro, testify that its imported counterparts do not taste better.
They, however, stress that a lot of needs to be done in provoking a change in the people’s perception of Ogogoro, adding that strategies such as better refining and packaging procedures for the drink should be adopted.

Mr Lawal Sale, a civil servant who studied in the now defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R), stressed that his Russian friends, who have had the opportunity of savouring Ogogoro, confessed that it had the same taste as Vodka.

According to him, the underlying problem is that Vodka is a traditional Russian drink, while the same cannot be said of Ogogoro in Nigeria.

“When one of my Russian friends tasted Ogogoro for the first time, he liked it a lot and compared it to Vodka."

“Ever since, he has always been an avid drinker of Ogogoro, having stayed in Nigeria for up to 15 years."

“The problem has to do with the general acceptability of Ogogoro as a national traditional drink; In Nigeria, it is only in some localities that people drink Ogogoro, unlike Vodka which is a traditional Russian
drink,’’ he said.

Sale, however, admitted that Ogogoro might find extremely it difficult to break into the international market because foreign liquors had dominated the market for years.

He noted that England was associated with gin, Scotland was associated with whiskey, while Latin American countries were associated with rum, adding, however, that “Ogogoro cannot be specifically associated with Nigeria.’’ Sale, however, rejected the notion in certain quarters that Ogogoro was an illicit drink, adding that such perception was somewhat skewed and imperfect.

He called on investors to look into ways of repackaging and rebranding Ogogoro, while making designed efforts to shore up its market potential.

Be as it may, research shows that the consumption of Ogogoro is quite high in Nigeria in spite of the outstanding rating of top-notch foreign spirits like Vodka; perhaps, due to economic reasons.

Investigations also reveal that there is a growing tendency to consume Vodka and other imported brands in the country because of factors induced by ego massage or status symbols.

A recent report of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) indicated that local spirits continued to dominate the Nigerian market (75 per cent) because they were cheaper than imported brands.

It, nonetheless, said that Ogogoro did not meet the standards of the increasing high-class and middle-class consumers who obviously preferred premium brands.

“Market opportunity is here for those prepared to take advantage of the growing consumption of premium brands."

“Spirits consumption is socio-cultural in Nigeria and imported liquor dominates at many social and cultural events."

“The traditional open air markets remain the largest distribution channels for spirits in Nigeria."

“Though still low, the sale of spirits through formal retailers has continued to increase in recent years and it is expected that the bulk of spirits will be sold in Nigeria through off-trade outlets such as supermarkets, grocery retailers and open markets since spirits are mostly consumed at home, during parties and other social gatherings.’’

The report said that the processing and distribution capacity of local spirits in Nigeria had increased considerably in the last two decades, adding, however, that it had continued to meet mostly the needs of the low-income consumers.

It said that while the production and consumption of Ogogoro were increasing, its distribution patterns were largely unrecorded.

“Ogogoro contains a high alcohol volume (51 to 53 per cent) but it is cheaper and more affordable; and it is consumed by low-income local consumers,’’ it said.

However, the report said that a large segment of Ogogoro consumers were growing old, adding that consumption had slowed down among this group in order to avoid the increased health risks associated with alcohol.

On its part, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) said that it was willing to assist any company which indicated interest in exporting Ogogoro in well-packaged forms, in line with internationally acceptable standards.

Mr Joe Itah, NEPC’s Head of Public
Relations, however, said that made-in-Nigeria gin was already in the international market, as some companies were already exporting the product.

“NEPC does not have Ogogoro on its list except that some established companies like Nigerian Distilleries Limited is already exporting dry gin."

“Ogogoro is not a banned item and NEPC will cooperate with anybody that applies for a licence to export it,’’ he said.

The people, who have a penchant for drinking Ogogoro, perhaps, have various reasons for doing so.

For instance, Malam Ibrahim Yakubu, a security man in Abuja, said that he drank Ogogoro regularly because the spirit had been quite helpful to him in his efforts to cope with stressful conditions.

He said that he would have been dead before now but for Ogogoro, which provided him some psychological relief from his numerous troubles.

“Brother, there are lots of things running in my head at once. So, after each day’s hustling, I try to relax by sipping something."

“If I just go straight home without relaxing that way first, it would be quite tormenting. I may not be able to sleep; I will just be lying down and looking at the ceiling thinking, aside from my wife’s usual troubles.

“There was a time my boss bought me an expensive foreign gin; I tasted it and kept the bottle aside because it did not give me the kind of satisfaction I derive from guzzling Ogogoro,’’ Yakubu said.

All the same, Mr Dominic Orakpu, an Abuja-based psychologist, said that many Nigerians usually preferred expensive goods to cheap ones, adding that Vodka and other expensive drinks were no exception.

He said that it was basically a function of the mind for people to ask for Vodka and other foreign liquors so as to massage their ego and enhance their social status even when Ogogoro drinkers derive same kind of euphoria from guzzling the spirit.

“The status of Ogogoro could be enhanced via better refining, fancy bottling, and perhaps, a change of name since the name itself had attracted odium over the years."

“For instance, there is a brand of beer in the market now called Origin; when you taste it, you will discover it is a blend ofAlomo Bitters; but it sells well because it was well-packaged with a new brand name,’’ Orakpu said.

Observers say that people who disparage Ogogoro often argue that it is harmful, insisting, however, every drink could be harmful if ingested in excessive
quantities.

They, therefore, underscore the need to promote local brews and repackage them for exports, as part of the country’s export promotion and economic diversification drive.

Court reinstates 15 sacked polytechnic workers in Ondo

The National Industrial Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Tuesday reinstated 15 out of the 32 sacked workers of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.

The court also ordered the management to pay the reinstated workers their outstanding salaries and allowances which have been withheld since they were sacked in early 2013.

The reinstated workers are: Abodunrin Moses, Adeoni Olusegun, Agbi Nelson, Arijeniwa Adedotun, Ayodeji Akinsanmi, Mrs. V.O Ayodele, S.B Bolaji, Ekundayo Gbenga and A.M Elegbede Others are: Olubamiji Kumuyi, Ogunbode Benson, T.L Olemija, Olugbamila Omotayo, Omotola cAlaba Olumayowa and S.O Oniyelu.

The Presiding Judge, Justice, Ndidi Ubaka, admitted that the workers were wrongfully sacked by the polytechnic authorities, saying the institution failed to justify the reasons why the workers were sacked.

Ubaka noted that the court returned 15 workers because they were able to provide the court with necessary documents which showed they were senior staff of the polytechnic.

The judge, however, said the court could not return the remaining 17 others, because they were unable to convince the court about their status in the school.

Pastor Adeboye won't want to live upto 100yrs

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, said, he will not want to live up to hundred years.

The 72 year old preacher doesn’t mind living up to 90, but being hundred for him, is not necessary.

Pastor Adeboye gave an indication of his view on longevity last Sunday, while delivering the sermon at the 60th birthday of the founder and president of Living Faith Church worldwide, a.k.a Winners Chapel, Bishop Oyedepo.

‘’When I marked 70 and people prayed that I would be up to 80, I said amen. When they said I would be up 90, I said well, amen. But when they said 100, I didn’t say amen."

“I didn’t because I don’t know what offence I would have committed for God to keep me up to 100 in this sinful world when a crown of glory is awaiting me in heaven."

‘’I wouldn’t mind to be 92 though, so that I will be alive to preach when Bishop Oyedepo is 80. But to live up to 100, I don’t know about that,’’ Pastor Adeboye said, noting that every birthday is a reminder that ‘’our days are numbered’’.

Nigeria will overcome its challenges, Jonathan insists

President Goodluck Jonathan has assured that Nigeria will overcome its challenges through unity and cooperation of Nigerians.

He spoke during the 54th Independent Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, themed: ‘Be Still’.

The President pointed out that the unity and cooperation of all Nigerians assisted in defeating the Ebola Virus Disease in Nigeria.

He said: “God knows that we have challenges and even before these challenges came, God knew that we were going to have them. There is nothing that he does not know, because whatever he does, is for a purpose.”

“As a nation, we are facing these challenges. We fought a civil war for 30 months. That time, the world was not even as sophisticated as it is today. Even when we heard about ”Ogbunigbe” it was like going to the moon. But now, even a little boy of twelve years can couple a gun by just going to the internet and kill people. Society has become so sophisticated and open that people continue to abuse privileges.”

“But because of the prayers of Nigerians, we will overcome the challenges of our country. The only thing is to appeal to all of us Nigerians to be united. If we are united, there is nothing we cannot conquer,” he said.

Citing the Ebola case, he said: “This is good example that all Nigerians must learn. When Patrick Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria, it was in Lagos that this incident happened and in terms of politics, Lagos is an opposition party but the central government is the ruling party.  From Lagos Ebola moved to Rivers state and this is also an opposition party State. But because all Nigerians fought Ebola irrespective of political persuasion, irrespective of religion, or ethnicity, we defeated Ebola.”

“We appealed to people to stop shaking hands, and as individuals, Nigerians became very hygienic. It was not just one person, or Mr. President or the Governors, or other officials, yes they did their work, but we defeated Ebola because all Nigerians agreed to fight the war against Ebola. That is the strengthen of unity.”

Ekiti mayhem's fallout

Ekiti State Governor- Elect, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has said the call by the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that he be arrested over recent political developments in the state was baseless, spurious and the product of an ignorant mind.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti yesterday through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, Fayose said Mohammed was fed with lies about the happenings in Ekiti State and that he had exposed himself by commenting in a manner only an ignorant fellow would do.

Adelusi noted that he was not surprised by Mohammed’s outburst because he, like other APC leaders, were sad as their efforts to launch a judicial coup failed woefully last Monday.

'We Yoruba people have a saying
that ‘inu a bimo ku ki idun’ (somebody who gave birth and lost the child would not be happy).'

'Having snatched people’s mandate through the back door, not once but twice, to rule states where they did not win elections, the APC and its leaders thought it the best way to secure electoral victory.'

'They did those things in the past
through some spurious judgments
and were hoping for a repeat
performance in Ekiti State after
the people rejected them with His Excellency, Mr Ayo Fayose, trouncing their candidate 16 goals to zero. Their man could not even win his local government.'

Three students shot in ESUT

Three students of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Agbani are on danger list of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH).

They  were Friday night shot and wounded by suspected armed bandits who invaded their hostel.
The affected students are currently
undergoing intensive surgery at the
hospital where they were rushed in the early hours of Saturday.

One of the students was shot in the stomach and it was suspected that some pellets of the bullet were lodged in his abdomen for which doctors are battling to remove.

The two other victims were also undergoing surgery at the hospital while efforts were being made to contact their parents.

The Unique Hostel where the incident occurred and other hostels within the Agbani Permanent site of the university, according to sources, have been placed under security watch as it was suspected that the gunmen could be members of a secret cult.

To forestall a reprisal attack, the source said, the management had taken measures to beef up security at the hostels with plain-clothe policemen deployed to strategic locations.

Police spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the armed attack said that preliminary investigations revealed that the gunmen could be “student robbers”, assuring that the police would do everything possible to get to the root of the matter.

He could not say if any arrest had been made but he said that the command was already on top of the situation and would give further details after the ongoing investigations.

“From what we gathered when the gunmen attacked some students at the ESUT Unique Lodge, which is mainly Boys Hostel, there was a stiff resistance by the students who succeeded in arresting one of the gunmen. The arrested gunman alerted his armed colleagues who returned to the hostel and began shooting indiscriminately during which three of the students were shot and wounded,” the police spokesman said.

Doctor treats Ebola with HIV drug in Liberia -- seemingly successfully

In this report by CNN, A doctor in rural Liberia inundated with Ebola patients says he's had good results with a treatment he tried out of sheer desperation: an HIV drug.

Dr. Gobee Logan has given the drug, lamivudine, to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived. That's a 7% mortality rate.

Across West Africa, the virus has killed 70% of its victims.

Outside Logan's Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his recovering patients walk the grounds, always staying inside the fence that separates the Ebola patients from everyone else.

"My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was vomiting," Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her bout with the virus. "They gave me medicine, and I'm feeling fine.

We take it, and we can eat -- we're feeling fine in our bodies." Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine and survived, received the drug in the first five days or so of their illness. The two patients who died received it between days five and eight.

We’ve reduced poverty by 50% – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday in Benin said the country had reduced its poverty rate by 50 per cent.

Jonathan said this while speaking at the South South Peoples Democratic Party political rally in Benin, tagged ‘Unity Mega Rally.’

He said that the PDP, as a party, believed in stomach infrastructure because the party must ensure that there was food security and job creation in the country.

He noted that any leader who claimed not to believe in stomach infrastructure was not ready to lead, as “you cannot lead hungry people.”

He desrcibed the PDP as the only stable party since its formation that had never changed its name, logo or motto, adding that it is the only paty that gives its members the freedom to climb to the highest level.

He said that all the nation needed was unity, and gave the assurance that although all the roads could not be rehabilitated at once, his administration would continue to improve on all infrastracture in the country.

He also gave the reassurance that since the nation was able to conquer the Ebola Virus Disease, it would also conquer the Boko Haram insurgency.

The president however appealed to the party loyalists to be decent in their variuos electioneering competitions in order not to create enemies among themselves.

Girl freed by Boko Haram pregnant, says Bitrus

The abducted 'Chibok girl" released on Wednesday is "pregnant and mentally ill," the National Chairman of Chibok Community Development Association, Dr. Pogu Bitrus, has told TheCable.

Earlier on Thursday, the police revealed that the 20-year-old girl was abandoned by suspected terrorists at Mubi in Adamawa State, from where she was picked up. It also confirmed that she was one of the female pupils of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, abducted in April by Boko Haram.

However, Bitrus said it was still uncertain if the girl was from Chibok because her name did not correspond with any of the names in the records of the girls that were captured by Boko Haram on April 14.

"I was speaking Kibaku to her, but she did not respond; she was incoherent. She may be having mental issues as a result of trauma," he said.

Bitrus added that preliminary tests – still not definitive – indicated that the girl is pregnant.

He added, "When she was picked up, she was taken to a clinic, not a standard hospital, and tests were carried out on her."

"From the tests, it was said she is pregnant, but that is still in the speculative domain because a qualified medical doctor has not confirmed that she is pregnant."

"However, we are still trying to establish if really she is from Chibok, because from our sources, the last name of the released girl does not tally with the surname of the person bearing the first name of the released girl captured in our records and whose father is a carpenter at Chibok. So, we are still trying to work out every detail."

T. B. Joshua did not Bribe Journalists

After listening over and over to the ‘audio proof’ file shared on social media by a journalist, Nicholas Ibekwe, I came to a simple conclusion that the Man Of God (M.O.G.), Prophet T. B. Joshua, did not bribe those journalists.

My take on this is that the journalist was merely out to drag the name of the M.O.G. in the mud- or just to make a name for himself. If he was in pursuit of the latter, then I beg to say that he had chosen the wrong way to do such. And if he was in pursuit of the former, then I fully conclude that he had actually dragged the name of God in the mud- there is always a reward for every of our actions.

For those who have things against Prophet T. B. Joshua, the transcribed version of his voice at the opening of the audio file is given below:

‘I want to thank you very much for your patience, and for your time. In fact, when they finish talking to you now, you’ll see, I want you to just pass through almost 2000 people I’ve been attending to. They are from all over the world. There are no, no single Nigerian.

Been attending to them. I’m attending to them (clears throat). So, I asked them to you give a copy of the cassette. So, and em... seven-fifty thousand for fuel, to buy fuel into your car.

Seven-fifty thousand. I think you have it here? So, you hand over to them. So, and em... the cassette. They need one, one cassette.’

From the above excerpts, nothing paints the picture of bribery in the gesture of the M.O.G. Christians are taught to appreciate diligence in discharge of duties. And in my opinion, that was the gesture of Prophet T. B. Joshua.

Before readers will jump into conclusions, let me state that I am not a member of the SCOAN. I am only making known my view about the action of the journalist, Nicholas Ibekwe.

In his article, ‘Synagogue Building Collapse: Why I exposed T. B. Joshua for bribing Journalists,’ Nicholas Ibekwe bragged about getting over 2000 followers on twitter as a result of the ‘audio proof file’  he shared on social media. I see this statement as one coming from a mind occupied by colossal ignorance- it would have been better not to respond to people’s reactions to the audio proof file.

I wouldn’t want to be too biblical here, but let me end by saying that God warned us not to touch His anointed and to do His Prophets no harm- either real or fake in your opinion, your duty is to allow God deal with His anointed and Prophets himself.

Nicholas Ibekwe should humbly go to God for forgiveness- He has the power to come down on you with His wrath for defying His instructions and dragging the name of His Prophet in the mud because of fame!

135 Boko Haram members surrender

The Defence Headquarters has said 135 Boko Haram insurgents have surrendered in Yobe and Adamawa states.

It said while 88 gave up in Mairiga/Bun–Yadi another group of 45 terrorists were captured in around Mubi – Michika axis in Adamawa State.

All the captured insurgents are presently undergoing interrogation in some designated military facilities.

The DHQ however admitted that many terrorists were killed including Mohammed Bashir who has been “acting or posing on videos as the deceased Abubakar Shekau, the eccentric character known as leader of the group died.”

The DHq made the disclosures in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, on the update on counter-terrorism campaign in the North-East.

The statement claimed that Boko Haram made futile four attempts to occupy Konduga, which is about 60 kilometres to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

It explained that each of the four encounters with Boko Haram in Konduga, between 12 and 17 September 2014, lasted about five hours.

Ebola-hit nations may face collapse- ICG

The BBC reports that the Ebola outbreak threatens to become a political crisis that could unravel years of effort to stabilise West Africa, a think tank has warned.

“The worst-hit countries now face widespread chaos and, potentially,
collapse,” the International Crisis Group (ICG) said.

The world’s largest outbreak of Ebola has caused 2,811 deaths so far, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile, a team of health workers in Guinea has been attacked.

The International Federation of the Red Cross said they were collecting bodies believed to be infected with Ebola in western Guinea.

One Red Cross worker is recovering after being wounded in the neck, it said.

Last week, an eight-member team trying to raise awareness about Ebola was killed in the south-east of the country by villagers suspicious of official attempts to combat the disease.

Twenty-seven suspects have been arrested over their murders, Guinea’s Justice Minister Cheick Sacko said, AFP news agency reports.

On Tuesday, the UN World Health Organization (WHO) warned that Ebola infections could treble to 20,000 by November if efforts to tackle the outbreak were not stepped up.

However, Francis Dove Edwin, a member of Sierra Leone’s presidential task force dealing with Ebola, said much progress had been made in curbing the outbreak.

'Patients were now being isolated and quarantined and from quarantine you have eradication,' Mr Dove told BBC Focus on Africa.

Lagos State suspends probe into cause of Synagogue building collapse

The Lagos State government has suspended investigation into the cause of the building collapse at Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) 13 days ago where no fewer than 115 persons had died.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lateef Ibirogba, who confirmed this yesterday, disclosed that all findings on the disaster would be withheld pending the outcome of another probe panel set up by the Federal Government.

The state government had on Monday called a world press conference on the disaster, which was later in the evening rescheduled for 10:00 a.m. yesterday.

At noon yesterday, the commissioner announced that the briefing had been cancelled based on “experts’ advice”. He said the advice was taken so as not to be “prejudicial or indict anyone” since the Federal Government’s committee was already investigating the disaster.

A new approach to ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaign proffered by Bishop

The Sun reports that the newly consecrated Bishop, Faithlife Charismatic Bible Church
(FCBC), New Oko-Oba, Abule-Egba
on the outskirts of Lagos,
Nathaniel Adekolu, has decried
the attitude of Nigerians to the
‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaigns,
adding that it has been put out of
context.

Bishop Adekolu spoke while
interacting with journalists on the
occasion of his consecration as a
Bishop by Word of Faith College of
Bishops. The event took place
recently at the Social Club Road of
the church auditorium.

According to him, 'what we need
to do is to encourage the law
enforcement agencies and the
intelligence department to go out
and bring the girls back.'

'People are complaining they were
not briefed on daily basis. Nigerians cannot be briefed on
daily basis and expect to get
results. The abduction of the girls
is not a matter that should be
discussed in the open. It is an
intelligence job.'

Renouncing the seeming apathy of
Christians to politics, which he
saidwas discouraging, he said:
“One can only lead a horse to the
water but cannot force it to drink
water.” He added that his ministry
would seek closer tie with the
Christian faithful in sensitising
them during 2015 elections.

He noted that many of the
politicians Christians were
competing with, drink, sleep and
wake politics. “They don’t have
any other industry other than
politics. Their children and entire
families are politicians, from
grassroots to the top. So, Christians have to wake up because politics is a battle for the souls of our nation.”

The Cleric claimed that Christians
were the majority, especially in
Lagos State, adding that though
there was no available statistics to
prove that but it was evident
looking around.

He said, 'One thing that is certain
is, Governor Babatunde Fashola is
not a Christian but he has done
well. What we need is a leader
that will do well. There is nothing
absolutely wrong in that leader
being a Christian to give
everybody a sense of belonging.'

'It is not a bad political strategy
for all the political parties to
choose Christians as their
candidates. I’m sure there are
honest Christians who will perform
well politically.'

'We know it is not about religion
but performance. Every one needs
a sense of belonging including the
Christians, so they should arise
and begin to get involved in
politics, beginning from the
grassroots, and the earlier, the
better.'

On the noticeable apathy by
Christians to vote during elections,
Adekolu said, 'It is very
unfortunate. Some Christians
don’t have permanent voters
card. They don’t care because
they believe votes don’t count.
But one has to vote first before
knowing whether it counts or not.'

“If one disenfranchises oneself
because votes don’t count, what
about if it counts? Then one would
have successfully voted in
candidates one never voted for by
one’s refusal to vote. Refusal to
vote is voting as well because
whomsoever mounts the saddle is
the person one who did not vote
wanted.”

Adekolu tasked the leadership of
the Pentecostal Fellowship of
Nigeria (PFN) to equally get
involved by creating awareness on
the need for Christians to be
actively involved by registering to
vote during the 2015 elections, adding that it was time to get it right.

On the challenges of insecurity
and kidnapping in the country, the
FCBC chief servant assured that
there was hope in the country. He
prophesied. “The challenges are
temporal. They had a day they
started; their moment of wound
up is also approaching fast.

“Boko Haram would soon be
history. Ebola is equally going to
be history. God is raising a crop of
leaders that would take Nigeria to
its destination. And the current
day politicians that had refused to
allow God use them, would be
removed.”

He said, “Those that yield to
God’s leadership would be used of
Him to take the nation to its
destiny. Nigeria is not an ordinary
country. As it is often said that
the map of Africa is like gun,
Nigeria is at the trigger point”
He disclosed that Nigeria was
critically important to God,
pointing out that God wants to use
her to reach out to generation yet
unborn. “Therefore, everybody
must play a role to ensure it
happens.” He advised.

He noted that the nation was as
good as the inhabitants adding
that what was fed into the
citizenry makes a nation. His
words. “The Nigeria’s economy
would go through positive
metamorphosis. It will be
historical and monumental. A time
is coming when many Nigerians
who fled the country because of
the economic situation would
begin to make a return journey
and those who have been around
in spite of the challenges would
recant and become instrument to
transform the nation."

Commenting on the abducted
Chibok Girls, he described the
incident as a most painful
phenomenon. He said. “We should
learn from the case of Osama bin
laden in America. He bombed
several people to death. When
America was looking for him. No
one heard about it until he met
his waterloo because it was an
intelligence matter."

“But in the case of Chibok Girls,
we have seen rallies everywhere
as if the government of President
Goodluck Jonathan is interested in
the perpetuation of the kidnap of
the girls. The government would
be the happiest if the girls are
rescued alive," Bishop Adekolu
said.

The cleric believed that
government was doing all it can to
rescue the girls noting that Boko
Haram sect would not release
them easily. He tasked Nigerians
to pray and trust God for miracles.

“Possibly more snakes should be
released into Sambisa to bite and
kill members of the sect,” He
enthused.

According to Adekolu whose early
stage in ministry began in1984, in
the North, “even Israel with all the
sophistry in their weaponry and
intelligence have had their citizens
kidnapped and they are looking for
the best possible way to rescue
their dead bodies."

“We don’t want Chibok girls’
bodies to be released to us. We
want to see them back and alive.
Campaigning and shouting the
harsh tag ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ as
if the law enforcement agencies
are not doing anything is not what
we need to bring them back.”

He advised those who want to
know what government was doing
to bring the girls back to visit the
State Security Service (SSS) office

Ugandan player slumped and died while watching EPL

A player of Simba FC in Uganda, Fahad Musana, collapsed and died on Sunday while watching an English Premier League match, africanFootball.com reports.

Musana, who featured in his team’s 1-0 win over Entebbe FC in a Uganda Premier League match reportedly collapsed after Frank Lampard equalized for Manchester City against Chelsea.

The Head Coach for Simba FC, Fred Kajoba, told africanFootball.com that the player even trained with the team on Sunday and told his friends he was going to spend his afternoon watching the English Premiership games.

“I think he suffered a heart problem when the team he supported Chelsea conceded the equalizer,” Kajoba told africanFootball.com.

Musana reportedly suffered a heart problem while watching the match in a video Hall in Bombo Town where Simba FC is based.

Another Simba FC player, Gerald Bagoole, said they trained and had lunch with Musana on Sunday.

“It was a big loss and we shall miss him,” he added.

The club announced that the player will be laid to rest in Iganga District Tuesday.

Ebola: School resumption in Lagos moved to Oct. 8

Pupils in at least 15 states in the country will not return to their classrooms today as directed by the
Federal Government.

This is because in most of the states, teachers are insisting that safety measures must be put in place to protect them and their pupils from contracting the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

In some of the states like Lagos and Ogun, the governments opted not to comply with the September 22 date until necessary Ebola safety kits were put in place in their schools.

Also, the gates of the 104 Unity Schools in the country will be shut from today as their teachers commence an industrial action.

The other states where normal academic activities will not resume are Rivers, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Benue, Niger, Zamfara, Adamawa, Kano, Kwara, Kogi, Akwa Ibom and Ebonyi states.

Teachers in Lagos will be on duty today but pupils will remain at home until October 8.

There had been controversy over the directive by the Federal Government that schools should resume on September 22 since the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease had been contained in the country.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers however ordered its members to shun academic activities until the government provided gadgets in schools to ensure not only their safety but that of their pupils.

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, after meeting on Sunday with public school headteachers, said the decision was to ensure that schools in the state were safe for both the teachers and their pupils.

He said, “On this issue of resumption, we are on the same side. We are all concerned about safety in the schools."

“Some states that would be  commencing their academic session tomorrow(today) did not have Ebola outbreak. The index case (Mr. Patrick Sawyer) landed in Lagos and not in these states. And I know that the teachers are afraid just like myself. My biggest fear is that nothing must happen to any resident of Lagos. I am not shy to say I am afraid."

“I understand the fear of the teachers. We are on the same side. We are all concerned about safety in the schools. Whether there is Ebola or not, we have to make the schools safe for the teachers and the pupils."

“My proposal is that the teachers, headmasters and principals should go to their various school tomorrow (today) and sort out whatever is missing in the prescribed Ebola preventive facilities."

"So, we have to use from tomorrow (today) and the rest of the week to get the schools ready for the students."

“And because of the Eid-il-Kabir festival that also falls within this time, rather than open and close the schools again for the festival. Immediately after the festival, the schools will commence academic session on October 8.”

He said that the state government had “awarded the contract to connect water to at least 800 schools in the state.”

The state NUT Chairman, Mr. Segun Raheem, confirmed the development to one of our correspondents.

Raheem, who argued that teachers in the state had always been in schools even during holidays, however, urged the government to ensure that it provided the necessary facilities before the return of pupils on October 8.

The Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, had last Friday announced October 8, as the new resumption date for both public and private primary and secondary schools in the state.

Adeoluwa said stakeholders in the state arrived at the new date after a series of meetings.

The state chapters of the NUT, the Academic Staff of Secondary Schools, the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools and the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, he added participated in the meetings.

'Religion can never be used to justify violence,' says Pop Francis

Pope Francis warned during a visit to Albania on Sunday that religion can never be used to justify violence, making apparent reference to the bloodshed wreaked by the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

"Let no one consider themselves to be the ‘armour’ of God while planning and carrying out acts of violence and oppression," the pontiff said in speech at the presidential palace in Tirana in front of Albania’s leaders.

"May no one use religion as a pretext for actions against human dignity and against fundamental rights," he said.

The 77-year-old spiritual leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics made the declaration at the start of a packed one-day visit to majority-Muslim Albania, which he held up as an 'inspiring example' of religious harmony.

His packed 11-hour trip to Albania comes at a sensitive time amid turmoil in the Middle East and rising intolerance in Europe.

The Vatican has voiced unusual support for US air strikes in Iraq to defend persecuted Christians there.

At the same time, though, the pope is spreading his message of interfaith tolerance around the world — and doing what he can to attract more devotees to his church.

The Holy See hopes Albania — a country with one of the youngest populations in Europe — will be a vibrant source for converts in a continent gripped by secularism.

It is the second papal visit to Albania in modern times. Pope John Paul II travelled there the year after the collapse of its communist regime in 1992.

Yellow-and-white Vatican flags flew alongside Albanian ones in the main streets of the capital while vast portraits of Catholic priests and nuns persecuted under communism when Albania became the world’s first atheist state were strung across roads.

Lagos State Govt. moves against the Synagogue Church over its collapsed building

The Lagos State Government has moved against the popular Synagogue Church of All Nations, Ikotun, due to the collapse of one of its buildings last week killing scores of people including a 10-year-old child with many others critically injured.

The building, which was under
construction, was initially a two-storey building before the addition of four new floors which were under construction.

As of Thursday, the death toll in the
building collapse hit 80, among which 67 were South Africans.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has, therefore, marked the main building of the church, asking for relevant documents to prove its
structural integrity.

The General Manager, Lagos State
Building Control Agency, Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo, confirmed that the building had been marked by the agency, said it had requested that the church provides some documents, adding that a structural integrity test would be carried out on all the buildings in the church complex.

She said that the 'X’, mark on the building, does not mean demolition; it is for structural integrity test to be carried out on the building and the church is expected to provide all the documents for approval and the church has three months to do this.

Last person under surveillance for Ebola in Lagos cleared

The Lagos State Government on Friday said the last suspected case of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the state had been cleared having tested negative after surveillance.

Gov. Babatunde Fashola disclosed this while giving an update on the virus at the Secretariat Central Mosque, Alausa, where he observed Jumat Prayers.

The governor said the development meant that the state was now Ebola free and that it was safe enough for schools to resume on Sept. 22.

       'The last time when we
discussed the issue, I told you
that about 19 people were still
       under observation over the
       Ebola Virus Disease.They were
       there not because they had
       the disease but because they
       were showing suspected
       symptoms.'

'But I am glad to report to you
       that the last person under
       surveillance was cleared this
       morning. He tested negative
and that means there is no
       more Ebola in Lagos.'

'Now that the disease has been
       successfully contained, schools
       can resume for normal
       academic session,' he said.

Fashola said the declaration that the state was now free did not mean Ebola threats had been completely eliminated; cross–border transmission threat is still there because of Liberia, Guinea etc.

The governor urged residents to be vigilant and to take precautions that would ensure their safety from the disease by keeping their environment clean and maintain good personal hygiene as diseases thrive in dirty environments.

The Final Say- a poem

HE issued the Word, "Let there be Light."
And out of no where
Sprang forth great Light,
The life of man never again to expeerience Night;

HE issued the Word, "Be fruitful and multiply."
And forthwith,
Plants, Animals and Humans
Received the onus to rise even to the sky;

HE issued the Word, "I am going to put an end to all people."
Without negotiation, the Heavens gave out rain,
Causing the earth to ripple;

HE issued the Word, "Stretch forth thy rod over the sea."
And suddenly, as eyes had never before seen,
There was a thundering parting in the Red Sea;

HE issued the Word, "I have given you Jericho."
and in what seemed like a trance,
The mighty walls came down with tundering echo;

HE issued the Word, "I have given you into the hands of your enemies."
And for years,
Turbulent times went they through like dummies;

HE issued the Word, "Your royal authority is take from you."
In a space of seven years,
Nebuchadnezzar dwelt and fed with animals
Drenched daily by Heaven's dew;

HE issued the Word, "Blessed art thou among women."
And beyond the explanatory power of science,
Ou of a virgin came Immanuel;

HE issued the Word, "Peace be still."
In absolute obeisance,
The raging storm of the sea ceased;

HE issued the Word, "Come forth."
The one who was dead and buried,
Rose and walked out from the tomb un-rot;

HE issued the Word!
And out of nowhere,
Came into existence, the entire world;

Who is it, who has the FINAL SAY?
He it is, who sits above the Heavens- YAHWEH!

Love without Tongues- a poem

Take me by the hand
Your eyeballs remind me of those days with the high school band;

All it required, all it took, gave I
Yet he slipped away before my very eye;

For years my cheeks played host to tears
Sobbing daily, I drown in the grip of fears;

Tomorrow seemed so far, never to come
Day and night, this mystery I tried to plumb;

Never for once, a tête-à-tête had we
Yet for him, my heart longed in wee;

My fantasy, into a nightmare grew
In my dreams, my mind he always blew;

For his audience I daily crave
To spill out the words, yet was I not brave;

Here I stood
At his figure afar off I look;

His gaze, on a blonde fell
While my feelings, in cage, way deep dwell;

In love with, have I fallen
My heart now a harbour for great burden;

Home had always been my place of refuge
Keeping him out of sight for a period so huge;

On a day, all that faded away
Next to our home, his family moved in to stay;

Having been in a situation of this sort
You understand the gravity of my heavy thought;

Take me by the hand and make this pain go
Hitherto my love life has been a fairy show;

Watch my lips and understand what they mutter
Feel the beat of my heart and know all its desire;

Place your lips on my ear and find the right words to spill
Let them go deep in me and put my soul in a longing drill;

Touch my skin and give my spine great shivers
All night long have I trembled in great quivers;

Look me in the eye and find where my pains lie
So through you sorrows bid I goodbye!

BUSYBODY

A busybody is someone who is too interested in what other people are doing. But, how does the bible describe a busybody?

In II Thes. 3:11

For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

This scripture is referring to those who just come to the house of God for one purpose- to tap into other people’s businesses. The bible calls them a beautiful name as we see in Pr 20:3

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

From this scripture, who is a meddler? Someone who always gets involved in what does not concern them is a meddler.

What makes a busybody

From the two scriptures above, we can deduce what makes a busybody:

A busybody is a meddler;
We already know who a meddler is- one who always gets involved in something that doesn’t concern them.

A busybody is someone who always gets involved in strife;

We know that strife simply means angry or violent disagreement between two people or groups of people.

A busybody is someone who walks disorderly;

Everyone knows what it means to walk disorderly- cat walkers should beware because the bible actually calls you a beautiful name.

A busybody is someone who is lazy;

If you’re the lazy type, the bible says you are a busybody- we all know what it means to be lazy. We can be lazy in every aspect of life.

A busybody is someone who has no honour;

Someone who has no honour before men is as good as a non-living thing- a busybody has no honour.

A busybody is a fool!

Ultimately, the bible states it clearly that a busybody is a fool.

Warnings to Busybodies

In II Thes. 3:12
Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

In IPt. 4:15
But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

In I Tim. 5:13-15
And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

For some are already turned aside after Satan.

As a busybody, the bible says that you have already taken after Satan.

We can read the following scriptures on our own:

I Pt. 2:20
Eph. 4:28
Acts 20:35
I Cor. 9:12

I pray that the Lord will redeem us all in the mighty name of Jesus Christ! Amen.

Lagos State Government warns of Facebook Scam

The Lagos State Government Tuesday called on residents of the State to be wary of a facebook scam whereby some unscrupulous persons are using the photographs of Governor Babatunde Fashola, and ascribing fictitious statements to him on fake Facebook accounts aimed at defrauding innocent citizens.

Scammers have been issuing out series of Facebook comments and information in the name of the Governor with the intention of duping unsuspecting members of the public.

A statement by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Hakeem Bello, said the conmen have, through Facebook, been urging citizens to apply for some existing government facilities or utilities meant to benefit the public but to which some agencies of government have been given the responsibility to manage.

The Government warned that such information must be emanating from people out to defraud members of the public adding that government businesses such as Home ownership by mortgage and pilgrimage are purely conducted on the authentic websites and other social media outlets managed by agencies of the State Government with assigned responsibilities in different areas.

One of such information titled,
“Disbursement of Subsidy Dividend (SURE-P)” purported to have been issued by the Governor is informing “Citizens that Subsidy proceed is available for Agro and commercial business”, and asking them to “Apply for soft loan with no collateral, zero percent interest rate and flexible terms”.

While advising citizens to always clarify with the appropriate agencies of Government before embarking on any dealings with people purportedly working for the State Government, the Government warned those involved in the nefarious act to desist or be ready to face the wrath of the law when it catches up with them.

‘Peter, Feed my Sheep.’ What did Jesus really mean?

Reading through the compendium of God’s thoughts, John 10:16 tells us that the word ‘sheep,’ as used, refers to those who believe in Jesus Christ.

As a result of their nature, sheep need someone of higher standing to direct them, and feed them with the required victuals for development. Jeremiah 23:4 tells us that the responsibility of feeding the sheep rests with Pastors, Deacons, Prophets, Reverends, Bishops etc. And John 10:11 refers to these people as ‘Shepherds.’

In these days where such titles have become things of political tussles in the vineyard of God, how many truly understand the word of Jesus Christ?

I Kings 22:17 tells us that when Jesus asked Peter to feed His sheep, He meant that Peter should bring unity among the sheep- Is there unity in Christendom today?

Psalms 23:1 also tells us that Peter, according to the instruction of Jesus, is supposed to provide for the needs of the sheep- how many Shepherds are wealthy off their impoverished members today?

Psalms 80:1 then tells us that Jesus’ statement also meant that Peter should lead the sheep aright- look closely and tell if we truly have that.

Ecclesiastes 12:11 gives us a perfect understanding that Jesus also meant that Peter should feed the sheep with godly wisdom- how many sheep are wiser than Shepherds today from the godly perspective?

Isaiah 44:28 tells us that the instruction of Jesus to Peter also meant that Peter should always do things that are pleasurable to God- how pleasurable are ‘divorce’, ‘politics’ and ‘tribalism’ to God?

Ezekiel 34:12 puts it this way- Peter is supposed to look for any sheep among the flock that is lost, and bring them back to the fold; how many sheep have wandered away from our fold today without being searched for?

Matthew 25:32 tells us that Peter is supposed to diligently separate goats from the flock of sheep under his care- how many goats are in the arm of affairs in God’s church today?

Luke 2:8 makes us understand that feeding the sheep also means watching over them even at nights- how many Shepherds pray for their sheep at nights today?

And John 10:12 tells us that Peter, who has the responsibility of feeding the sheep, must not be cunning- he must always come in through the front door.

Looking around us today, we’ll see that most Shepherds have conformed themselves to Zechariah 11:15- they have become foolish. Most of them even feed off the sheep- they have made the sheep their source of greedy amassing of wealth. Was that what Christ meant?

Are you a Shepherd? Do you really understand Jesus’ word when He asked Peter to feed His sheep?

Zechariah 13:7 says that a time will come when God’s anger will be kindled upon those Shepherds who have made themselves foolish- God will smite them. And no one can rescue anyone smitten by God!

‘Peter, feed my sheep.’ What did Jesus really mean? I report, you decide!

67 South Africans died in Synagogue building -Zuma

Indications that more people than the bodies so far recovered died in the collapsed building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations last Friday emerged on Tuesday as the South African President Jacob Zuma announced that 67 South Africans were victims of the incident.

"I am greatly saddened to announce that 67 South Africans died and scores of others sustained injuries, after a building at the Synagogue Church of All Nations collapsed on Friday," Zuma said in statement.

The official death toll by the National Emergency Management Agency (NAMA) as at Tuesday night was 63, while 131 were rescued alive.

At least five South African church tour groups were at the Synagogue at the time of the collapse, according to officials.

“Not in the recent history of our country have we had this large number of our people die in one incident outside the country.

“Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues that have lost their loved ones in this heart-breaking tragedy.

The whole nation shares the pain of the mothers, fathers, daughters and sons who have lost their loved ones. We are all in grief."

Zuma said he had ordered government departments to help family members get to Nigeria to identify the bodies of their loved ones, and repatriate the remains as soon as possible.

Jonathan pleads with NUT over Sept. 22 resumption date

President Goodluck Jonathan has appealed to the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other unions to resume work on Monday September 22, 2014.

Speaking with journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, he maintained that the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been successfully contained in the country.

He explained that the government has taken adequate and globally accepted measures to check the spread of the disease in the country.

The President pointed out that the relevant authorities have put in place necessary equipment and gadgets at the nation’s airports and other entry points to stop any further importation of the disease into Nigeria.

Keeping Nigerian schools closed over Ebola, he said, would send wrong signal to other countries and make them to treat all Nigerians travellers as Ebola carriers.

Stressing that Ebola is presently not a problem in Nigeria, he said: "we have been able to manage Ebola and the whole world is happy with us and we must tell the whole world that we have managed Ebola and no Nigerian should be segregated because of Ebola."

"In fact Osun State was to have their festival and the news came to me to cancel it I said no, Ebola is no longer a threat in Nigeria and we must tell the world that we have been able to contained Ebola."
"Yes, Ebola is in the West Coast, it could happen in Ghana, it could happen in Senegal or any of the West African countries or beyond but they have not closed down their institutions. If we still have Ebola definitely we will not open any of our institutions but we don’t have Ebola."

He added; "I dare ask is NUT saying that until the world is able to end Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone before Nigeria should open our institutions? It is not right. Government is not a fool, it is not any labour body that asked us to take that decision, we took it because we felt that we must protect our citizens."

"This is one government that discusses with anybody that has issues to discuss."

"Even NUT has no reason to threaten industrial action because of Ebola, the governors took that decision. I called all the governors of the states to come with their commissioners of health.

"On the day of that meeting I did not even allow them to speak because they will play politics. I asked all the commissioners including the Secretary of Health in Abuja, to brief us on the steps they have taken and they listened to their colleagues because it was also a peer review process."

"If you are hiding certain things by the time you hear your colleagues you will go back and get things done. We are sure that even if one mad Sawyer comes again, nobody will contract Ebola. We have managed Ebola very well, the world is happy we must tell the world that no Nigerian should be suspected of Ebola and that is the position of government."

Appealing to NUT, he said: "I will plead with NUT and other unions that this does not require industrial action. They should commend government, they should work with us, they are Nigerians, all Nigerians must work together to make sure that we contain Ebola. Why do we want to create problems where it is not necessary, it is uncalled for." He stated

The President commended the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola and his Rivers State counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi for working with the Federal
Government to contain the disease in their states.

Lagos is set for oil exploration from 2015

Lagos State will commence oil and gas exploration by next year, following the discovery of large deposit of oil in Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, and the Badagry areas of the state.

The Chairman, Committee on Energy, Mineral Resources and Waterfront Infrastructure, Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi, who disclosed this in Lagos, explained that the state House of Assembly has enacted an enabling law to that effect.

"The Folawiyo Group is partnering with the Ministry of Energy in the state and very soon, Lagos would join oil producing states.

'Exploration trends will follow the industry’s perception of the next best resource base to explore and develop, which incorporates both the scale and quality of the resource and the cost of its development.'

'Through exploration, acquisitions, strategic partnerships and technological expertise, Lagos State is in pursuit of the growth strategy.'

'Natural gas is a future -oriented
resource in global energy supplies
and there are sufficient supplies
of this climate-friendly, cost-effective, and safe fuel," he said

Death toll from the SCOAN collapsed building rises to 49

Five more bodies have been
recovered from under the rubbles
of the six storey building that
collapsed on Friday within the
Synagogue Church of All Nations in Ikotun, a Lagos suburb.

This brings the total number of bodies so far recovered to 49. The latest bodies were recovered on Monday, as rescue efforts by men of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA ), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA ), Rapid Respond Squad and Lagos State Fire Service intensified.

Confirming the figure of casualties, NEMA South West spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the rescue efforts will continue today until they have certified that nobody, whether dead or alive, was trapped under the rubbles.

Mr Farinloye also said sniffer
dogs have been deployed to help
in identifying any location of
possible trapped bodies.

'We are deploying Nigeria Police
sniffer dogs to assist in locating
trapped victims as we are getting

were yet to be found up till
Monday.

The girl, who is currently receiving
treatment at the Lagos State
University Teaching Hospital
( LASUTH), Ikeja, was yet to be
claimed by her parents or any
guardian.

Consultant and Head of the
Surgical Emergency Department
of the hospital, Ibrahim
Mustapha, said though the girl
was fit to be discharged, she
cannot go home as her parents or
any guardian was yet to come and
claim her.

He noted that they were yet to
get basic information from the
little girl, which would have
helped social welfare workers at
the hospital to trace her parent’s
whereabouts.

S'Africa seizes $9.3m cash from 2 Nigerians and 1 Isreali

The South African police are investigating two Nigerians and an Israeli citizen who tried to bring $9.3m (about N1.5bn) in cash into the country illegally, a spokesman said on Monday, in what might have been part of an arms deal.

Reuters reported that the South African Revenue Service seized the funds at Lanseria Airport, north-west of Johannesburg, on September 5. The funds are being held at the central bank as police investigate, SARS spokeswoman Marika Muller said.

      "The passengers’ luggage was
       searched after Customs
       officials detected irregularities.
The money was detained as it
       was undisclosed/undeclared
       and above the prescribed legal
       limit," Muller said in a
       statement.

South Africa’s City Press newspaper reported that bundles of unused $100 bills packed in three suitcases were transported in a small business jet from the Nigerian capital, Abuja. And the three passengers said they were using it to buy arms for the Nigerian security services, City Press said.

EBOLA: FG, NMA agree on schools’ resumption date

The Federal Government and the Nigerian Medical Association on Monday finally harmonized positions on the September 22 resumption of schools nationwide.

The NMA said the September 22 date earlier announced by the federal government for the resumption of schools was acceptable and that schools should resume 'in order not to feed into the fear monster in the country.'

The association while agreeing with the government’s position at a stakeholders’ meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Education however gave six provisions to be followed to keep the country safe.

The President of the NMA, Dr. Kayode Obembe, said the association changed its mind on the condition that the government would, among other conditions, maintain “highest level of vigilance” in the several entry points in the country, resuscitate infectious disease hospitals in states and ensure comprehensive screening of travelers.

NMA said the international Port Health Services should be put in the highest level of vigilance and preparedness to screen those coming into the country.

"All recent travelers to all the
        provinces of the current
        endemic countries of the
        Ebola disease – namely
        Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone
        Ivory Coast, Democratic
        Republic of the Congo,
        Uganda, Sudan and Gabon-
        must be carefully scrutinized
for the presence of the virus
        and epidemiologically treated
        accordingly," NMA added.

UNILORIN to screen all students for Ebola

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor AbduGaniyu Ambali, on Monday announced that all students of the institutions will be screened for the Ebola Virus Disease before they are allowed to resume for the new academic session.

The students proceeded on end-of-session break before Patrick Sawyer brought the disease into the country in July.

Speaking at the university’s health centre while unveiling preventive kits worth N1.2m, Ambali said UNILIORIN was fully prepared to combat the disease.

        "The procurement of the
anti-Ebola kits is part of the
         university’s preparedness to
         tackle the epidemic
         headlong," NAN quoted him
         as saying, adding that face
         masks, boots, hand gloves,
         automatic soap dispenser,
         infrared thermometer and
         disposable bed spreads were
         among the items that the
         institution procured to fight
         the disease.

He commended members of the institution’s Ebola response committee for their foresight and prompt response, charging the university’s health workers to be alert and to follow stipulated procedures in the case of an outbreak.

The university’s director of health services, Dr Mary Ajiboye, who presented the equipment to the Vice Chancellor, said the kits were
for the protection of staff and students.

       "The committee would place
         the hand sanitisers in
         strategic locations on the
         campus such as the Senate
         Building, faculties, walkways
         and Unilorin FM station," she
         said.

Born with an upside down head; meet the man who defied doctors' reports

Resourceful Claudio Vieira de Oliveira knows more than a thing or two about overcoming adversity.

Medics told the now-37-year-old's
mother to let him starve to death after he was born with a rare condition of the joints that left him with severely deformed limbs ... and an upside-down head.

But despite his physical limitations, Claudio, from Monte Santo, Brazil, has defied doctors' doubts to become an accountant and inspirational public speaker.

'Since I was a child I've always liked to keep myself busy and work - I don't like to depend totally on other people,' he said. 'I do a bit of accounting, research for clients and consulting.

'I have learned to turn on the TV, pick up my cell phone, turn on the radio, use the internet, my computer - I do it all by myself.'

Claudio types with a pen held in his mouth, operates phones and a computer mouse with his lips and has specially made shoes that allow him to shuffle around town.

His independence saw him succeeding at school and qualifying as an accountant from the State University of Feira de Santana.

When Claudio was born, doctors told his mother Maria Jose he would not be able to survive.

Maria Jose said: 'People started saying 'the baby is going to die' because he could barely breath when he was born.

'Some people would say: 'Don't feed him, he is already dying'.

'But there's only happiness now. Claudio is just like any other person - that's how he was raised in this house.

'We never tried to fix him and always wanted him to do the normal things everyone else does.

'That's why he is so confident. He is not ashamed of walking around in the street- he sings and he dances.'

At eight years old, Claudio, who had previously been carried everywhere, began to walk on his knees.

His family had to change the floor of the house so he could walk around without injuring himself.

Claudio's bed, plugs and lights had to be made lower so that he could do things for himself without asking for help.

He cannot use a wheelchair because of his unusual shape, making it hard for him to be independent outside the home - but he begged his mother to be allowed to go to school and learn with the other children.

Doctors have recently diagnosed him with a rare condition called congenital arthrogryposis.

They believe he has multiple joint contractions in his legs and arms which mean they cannot extend properly.

Claudio said: 'Throughout my life I was able to adapt my body to the world.

Right now, I don't see myself as being different. I am a normal person.

'I don't see things upside-down. This is one of the things I always talk about in my interventions as a public speaker.'

'Nowadays it's much easier to deal with the public, I'm not afraid of it anymore and I can say that I am a professional, international public speaker and that I receive invitations from all over the world.'

He is not the only person with the
disease who has refuse to let it
overcome his life.

Lagos state directs schools to resume on Sept. 22nd

Lagos State government yesterday
said it will comply with the directive of the Federal Government on the September 22, 2014 resumption date for all public and private schools in the country following a national consultation on efforts to contain the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on
Information and Strategy, Mr Lateef Raji, the state government said that schools have to comply with the directive since there is currently no known carrier of EVD  in the state.

      "Although this resumption date
is advisory, as education is a
       concurrent matter to be
       regulated by the respective
       federal and state authorities,
       Lagos State government
       considers it eminently
justifiable, in view of the fact
       that there is currently no
known carrier of EVD in our
       state at the moment."

      "Furthermore, the last
       individual suspected to have
been exposed to the virus will
       be discharged from
       observation on September 18,
2014, if he tests negative to
       the virus."

      "All public and private
       educational institutions in the
       state are, therefore, directed
       to schedule their resumption
       accordingly," the statement
       added.

Meanwhile, Kano State government has rejected the position of the state chapter of the Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), demanding Ebola-free medical certificates from returning
students and pupils in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Abubakar Nuhu Danburam said the state government has no hand in the decision even as he urged the association to rescind the decision immediately.
